Under these arrangements seven beds at St. Bartholomew's
Hospital were reserved for Hackney mothers and 34 cases were
dealt with during 1944. An additional seven beds at Poplar
General Hospital have been reserved since February, 1945.
Charges for Maternity and Child Welfare Services.—During the
year the Council revised the income scale, adopted in 1920, for
assessing the ability of parents to contribute towards the cost of
maternity and child welfare services (other than the provision of
Home Helps) provided under the Council's scheme. This revision
had become necessary as a result of the increase during the war in

the cost of living. The following is the revised scale:—
