In January, 1943, the Ministry of Health drew attention to the
lack of institutional maternity bed accommodation in London and
a scheme was formulated which secured the provision of additional
maternity beds in voluntary hospitals for cases to be booked through
the borough councils' maternity services. Payment for the beds
is made by the London County Council, patients" contributions
being collected by the hospitals.
