as to the quality of the milk supplied to persons who were discontented
at the compulsory transfer to a different supplier.
Daily attendance still remains necessary at the Ministry of
Food Depot, Shore Road, which supplies meat to this and five
neighbouring boroughs.
No formal seizure of unsound food was necessary during the
year.
Only 6 notifications of food poisoning were received and in
no case was the illness of a serious or protracted nature and the
diagnoses in these cases were not confirmed by bacteriological
findings.
With reference to the milk supply, at the end of the year one
cowkeeper, 83 dairies and milkshops, 108 dairymen (including those
whose premises are situated outside the Borough) and 289 purveyors
of milk in sealed receptacles remained on the Register. In no case
was it found necessary to refuse registration or to remove a retailer
from the register under Section 22 of the Food and Drugs Act, 1938.
Under tlhe Milk (Special Designations) Order 36 principal
licences and 6 supplementary licences were granted. Of the principal
licences 4 were in respect of pasteurising establishments, 1 was
for a tuberculin-tested bottling establishment, 21 were dealers'
licences for the sale of pasteurised milk and 10 were dealers' licences
for the sale of tuberculin-tested milk. One of the licences in respect
of pasteurising establishments related to the new high temperature
short-time process. Two hundred and twenty-three samples were
taken of milk sold under Special Designations and fifteen of these
were found not to conform to the requirements of the Orders. The
vendors of these samples were warned and advice given to enable the
cause of the adverse reports to be rectified. The practice of submitting
all samples of pasteurised milk to the phosphatase test was
again followed and 8 samples were reported positive by this test.
These samples were examined for tubercle bacilli with negative
results.
Premises used for tlhe preparation or manufacture of sausages
or potted, pressed, pickled or preserved food are required to be registered
by Section 14 of the Food and Drugs Act, 1938. At the end
of the year the number of premises remaining on the register was
155.
