They were most cordially welcomed and, after having made a careful
inspection, they expressed their keen interest and satisfaction in the work
being done, which is certainly very encouraging to the Committee and to the
Staff.
It is a splendid work that is being done and we are beginning to see now,
some of the results of the institution of the Nursery; by this I mean, that some
of the children who were there as babies have now attained school age, and
the benefits of regular habits, rest hours and the right food at the proper times
can readily be recognised. Those of the children whom we have seen recently
are really bonny and strapping youngsters.
By a resolution arrived at during the year, Mrs. E. B. Holmes and Mrs. A.
Creasey of the Ladies' Inner Wheel of The Rotary Club of Hackney, have been
co-opted to the Committee and I take this opportunity to offer them a cordial
welcome to our Councils.
The generous action of the "Michaelmas Players"—who produced the
play, "Night Must Fall" with their usual talent—and the 10th London Old
Comrades' Association Dance for the benefit of the Nursery, are duly recorded,
and grateful thanks are extended to them.
The kind consideration of the Spurstowe Trustees, in practically replacing
the internal staircase and by renewing several floors, has helped us very much.
Many other things have been done, such as the installation of an airing
apparatus, new beds, etc., and these have all added to the comforts of the
Nursery.
Because of the Crisis, the Concert arranged for our benefit by "G" Division
of the Police had to be postponed.
For the same reason, our ''Pound Day'' was not as successful as we had
hoped for. It was held on October the 4th and we do offer a sincere tribute of
appreciation to the Mayoress of Hackney (Mrs. H. W. Capell) and to Lady
Keymer for presiding on that day.
The attendance and the help given by His Worship The Mayor of Hackney
(Alderman H. W. Capell, J.P.) were also most particularly appreciated.
We are again deeply indebted to the Borough Medical Officer of Health,
Dr. G. H. Dart, who has given us excellent advice on many occasions and
rendered important services to the Nursery.
Special mention must be made of the unstinted time and work, so nobly
given by our very good friend, Dr. S. W. Turtle. Our honorary Auditors,
Messrs. Button Stevens and Witty, are also accorded a well-deserved meed of
praise.
There are many other valued friends whom I should like to mention, but
I have endeavoured, as far as possible, to thank them personally for the
innumerable services rendered to the Nursery. Lack of space prevents me
mentioning all by name, but it must be said, that it is a cause for rejoicing
that we still have the invaluable help of Miss Janet Payne and Mrs. Fotheringham,
two most constant and efficient workers; and then, again, I should be completely
lacking in my duty if I failed to express the deep gratitude we all feel for the
tremendous amount of good work put in by our esteemed and indefatigable
Treasurer, Mrs. C. H. Brown, and by Mrs. R. E. Izzard, our devoted and
untiring Secretary. Lastly, but by no means least, I do with much pleasure
record the very loyal and highly skilled services rendered by our Matron,
Miss Newbegin, and her very capable and competent assistant Staff.
