It can be stated, therefore, that some 70 per cent, of the
expectant mothers attend either at the Borough Council's antenatal
centres or at the ante-natal sessions held at hospitals in the
Borough. Many Hackney women attend for ante-natal supervision
at hospitals outside the Borough and others receive this
supervision from the medical practitioners or midwives with whom
they book for confinement.
For some years past the Council has had an arrangement with
the London County Council under which women showing signs of
abnormal or multiple pregnancy are referred to Hackney Hospital
for X-ray examination, also an arrangement with the authorities of
the London Chest Hospital, Victoria Park, for the X-ray examination
of expectant mothers referred from the ante-natal clinics to the
Hospital for an expression of opinion upon heart conditions.
Fifty-two mothers were referred to Hackney Hospital during
1938 for X-ray examination under these arrangements.
