During the year the voluntary committee of the Eton Mission
Maternity and Child Welfare Centre gave notice to the Council of
their desire to relinquish the responsibility of maintaining the
Centre in view of their financial situation and decreasing subscriptions
from voluntary sources. The Eton Mission authorities were,
however, anxious to continue to assist the Borough Council in
maintaining the maternity and child welfare service in the Hackney
Wick district and undertook to permit the Council to use the
Mission rooms free of any charge for rent, heating or lighting. The
Council took over control of the Centre on 1st October, 1938.
A list of the present infant welfare centres in the Borough
appears on page 32 of this report. The work of the two remaining
voluntary centres is co-ordinated with that of the Borough Council.
These voluntary centres are supported by voluntary contributions
and grants from the Borough Council.
