Additional Information obtained from the Survey.
(1) Tenement Houses.—Useful information has been obtained
with regard to the number of houses let in tenements, which amounts
to 5,537. taking for this figure tenement houses occupied by three
or more families.
(2) Underground Rooms.—The survey revealed the existence of
approximately 9,571 houses with basement or semi-basement
rooms, the floors of which are approximately 3 feet or more below
the level of the street or ground adjoining.
Measurement and survey of all these rooms would be necessary
to ascertain whether they are underground rooms within the meaning
of the Housing Acts, and if so, as to whether they are in conformity
with the Borough Council's Regulations relating to such rooms.
The Housing Acts and Regulations previously applied only to
underground rooms used for sleeping purposes, but the Housing
Act, 1935, brings all such rooms, whether used for sleeping or
living, within the law relating to underground rooms.
