Slaughter of Animals Act, 1933.—Twenty-one applications for
the renewal of slaughtermen's licences were received and granted
during the year.
Unsound Food.—The following foodstuffs were examined and
condemned by the Council's Food Inspectors and surrendered to the
Council for destruction, in accordance with Section 47 of the Public
Health (London) Act, 1891:—
1 cwt. 3 qrs. beef and mutton. 3 bags cucumbers.
3 qrs. sausages. 14 barrels grapes.
12 cwt. 2 qrs. bacon. 4 cases pomegranates.
5 tins corned beef. 1 bag chestnuts.
3 tins brawn. 1 box dried fruit.
5 tins ham. 1 case tinned cherries.
5 boxes fillets. 1 case tinned damsons.
5 boxes smoked fillets. 1 case tinned peaches.
10 boxes kippers. 1 bag walnuts.
4 boxes skate. 27 cases tinned evaporated milk.
3 boxes haddocks. 9 cases tinned condensed milk.
1 box dabs. 42 cases sweets.
1 box plaice. 36 cases packets cake powder.
3 cases tinned salmon. 12 cases tinned lemonade powder.
2 cases tinned sardines. 5 cases mixed tinned food.
2 tins prawns. 4 cases bottled sauce.
8 cases tinned peas. 1 case biscuits.
8 boxes tomatoes. 1 box margarine.
212 cases tinned tomatoes.

The weight of the foodstuffs condemned or surrendered, including the diseased meat condemned at the slaughterhouses, was:—

It was found necessary to make three formal seizures of unsound
food during the year:—
(1) A quantity of confectionery was found deposited for sale
and being sold to children at a trifling cost. The
confectionery was dirty and had been fouled by mice. The
owner was prosecuted and a fine of £20, with £2 2s. costs,
was imposed.
(2) A consignment of tinned tomatoes was examined and
samples sent for chemical and bacteriological examination.
