The number of families from the whole of the areas being dealt
with by the Borough Council who have intimated that they desire
to be accommodated by the Borough Council is 277. It will be
seen that the Lower Clapton Road Estate, which was officially
opened on the 5th May, 1934, provides accommodation for 198
families, and the Borough Council has approved the re-housing in
these flats of persons from the Banister Street, Prince of Wales'
Terrace, Otley Terrace, Elsdale Street, East Street and Queen's
Court areas, totalling 103 families, the remaining accommodation
being utilised for the accommodation of persons on the Council's
housing register.
With the vacation of the Banister Street area, the work of
demolition and the erection of the proposed flats will be proceeded
with in time to provide accommodation for the families to be displaced
from the Nisbet Street, Clarence Terrace, Fulham Place,
Pear Tree Court and Austin's Buildings areas, in regard to which
the Clearance Orders will then be put into operation.
In the case of the Abbot Street area, the displacement of the
persons from this area will not take place immediately, as far as
can be ascertained at present, but the Council will put into operation
as soon as possible all its powers under the Clearance Order.
