The action taken by the Public Health Committee in cases considered
by them during the year is as follows:—
Closing Orders made 3
Undertakings accepted from owners not to
re-let rooms for sleeping places 9
Alterations made which secured compliance
with the Regulations as to underground
rooms 2
REPORT OF THE CANAL BOATS INSPECTOR.
Number of visits to waterways 31
Number of boats inspected
The general depression of trade may be partly responsible for
the fact that no boats were inspected during the year. The majority
of the boats inspected during the past few years have been from
Ware; but some of the firms owning these have now given up
business, and consequently there are only two or three boats using
the River Lea, and these have not been moored in Hackney during
my visits.
The increase of road motor transport is also a contributing
factor.
Another cause is the use of motor-driven and motor-hauled
instead of horse-drawn boats. In the case of horse-drawn boats it
is necessary for frequent halts to be made for resting and changing
the horses, whereas the strings of boats hauled by a motor boat
pass through the Borough without stopping.
