The continued success of the Dental Clinic is a tribute to the
work and popularity of the Dental Surgeon and the Ansesthetist.
By the kindly, skilful manner in which Dr. Montague Smith deals
with timid children and the nervous pregnant women treated at the
Clinic he does much to banish the dread of submitting to dental
treatment under anaesthesia.
The following is a Report by the Dental Surgeon :—
Report by H. C. Middleton, L.D.S., R.C.S. (Edin.).
The work of the Dental Clinic has proceeded along the same general lines as
in previous years.
The prejudice against dental treatment during pregnancy and lactation appears
to be dying out. No untoward event has resulted from the dental treatment of
pregnant women during the seven years the Clinic has been open. Multiple
extractions are undertaken up to the eighth month of pregnancy.
With regard to the prevention of caries, some progress has been made with
the joint administration of calcium salts and vitamins A and D. With correct
food, cooking, and feeding, such artificial aids to calcification would not be
necessary. I repeat what I have stated in previous reports, that until a change
comes over the diet and feeding habits of the nation there will be no diminution in
dental caries. At the present time 80 per cent, to 90 per cent, of children of school
age have carious teeth.
The work of the Dental Clinic is helped by the good influence of the Health
Visitors in urging the benefits of a healthy mouth.
