reside in Hackney entered the City of London Hospital for confinement
and was transferred with her baby to the Maternity Refuge
at No. 6, Pembury Road.
These homes for unmarried mothers and their babies are
regarded by the Registrar-General as the usual place of residence of
the infants, and any deaths occurring among infants from these
Institutions are not, therefore, transferable to the district from
which the mothers came.
There are no less than nine Institutions of this kind in Hackney,
and, although many of the mothers and babies who enter the homes
have no real connexion with the Borough, every death occurring
therein is allocated to Hackney. Protest has been made to the
Registrar-General at the instructions of the Maternity and Child
Welfare Committee without result.

The following is a table of the infantile deaths and death rates in England and Wales, London and Hackney in 1931, together with the infantile death rates in five-year periods.
