OVERCROWDING.
A short description of the overcrowding cases remaining on the Public
Health Department records follows. Since January 1st, 1927, the County Council
has accepted 107 cases out of the 307 recommended by the Medical Officer of
Health, 21 applicants refused accommodation offered by the London County
Council, 25 other cases were relieved in various ways. The following list shows
the condition of those uncatered for; this list is not by any means comprehensive,
as it refers only to cases of complaint, or brought, on account of a desire for
better housing accommodation, to the notice of the Public Health Department.
Sickness,poverty—82 applicants were refused owing to insufficient means to pay the rent of Municipal dwellings—friction between the families cooped up in insufficient space, inability to separate the sexes of growing children, difficulties owing to insufficient sanitary accommodation in houses not designed for the number of persons in residence, all these and many other circumstances have caused suffering and discomfort.
