During the year 54 specimens of blood from persons suspected.
to be suffering from enteric fever were submitted to Widal's test. 45
gave a negative reaction, and 9 positive.
Continued Fever.—There were no notifications of continued fever
in the Borough during the year.
Typhus Fever.—There was not any notification of typhus fever
in the Borough during the year.
Puerperal Fever.—There were 10 cases of puerperal fever notified
during 1928; all the cases were removed to hospital. The deaths
from puerperal fever and septicaemia numbered 4. The attack-rate
for the year was 2.8 per 1,000 births, and the death-rate 1.1 per
1,000 births.
Maternal Deaths.—Puerperal sepsis, 4; Septic Abortion, 1;
Haemorrhage following Placenta Prsevia, 1; Eclampsia of Pregnancy,
2; Pulmonary Embolism following Parturition, 3; Obstetric shock, 2;
Premature Labour, 1; Acute Nephritis of Pregnancy, 1.
Puerperal Pyrexia.—(The Public Health (Notification of
Puerperal Fever and Puerperal Pyrexia) Regulations, Dated 31st
July, 1926).
During the year 44 cases were notified. 36 cases were removed
to Hospital. The attack-rate was 12-6 per 1,000 births.
Lady Florence Barrett, M.D., M.S., Dr. Margaret Basden, M.D.,
F.R.C.S., and Dr. McKim McCulloch, F.R.C.S., each attended as Consultant
to one case.
Plague.—There were no notifications of Plague in the Borough
during the year.
Cholera.—There were no notifications of Cholera in the Borough
during the year.
Erysipelas.—There were 41 cases of Erysipelas notified during
1928. This is equal to an attack-rate of 0.18 per 1,000 inhabitants,
compared with 0.42 for England and Wales. Of the 41 cases notified,
26 were removed to hospital.
There were 4 deaths certified to be due to erysipelas.
