Enquiries are made into the nature of food stuffs thought to be
harmful. The following were examined during the year:—
Chocolate Easter Egg.—This sample consisted of a shell onesixteenth
of an inch thick, and that was not all chocolate but contained
35 per cent, of cocoa butter, the remainder being cocoa powder,
sugar and maize starch—largely the latter. The chocolate was of
low-grade quality, rough to palate, and poor in flavour. The core
consisted of a biscuit material.
Rice.—There were few grains present in this sample from which
husk had not been removed.
Pie.—:No coliform bacilli. No non-lactose fermenting bacilli.
No coccoid organisms. Large number of spores bearing bacilli of
B. subtilis type. The consumption of meat pie containing large
numbers of these organisms may tend to produce temporary gastrointestinal
symptoms.
