3.—HOSPITAL, CONVALESCENT AND MIDWIFERY
ASSISTANCE.
(1) Maternity Hospitals.— The Council pays the sum of one
guinea in respect of each necessitous case admitted from the Borough
for treatment at either of the undermentioned institutions. A
necessitous case being considered a patient who, by reason of poverty
or other causes, is unable to pay for the treatment received, an
amount equal to one-half the average cost per patient of the maintenance
and administration charges for the year ended December 31st,
1926.

(2) Agreement for the Provision of Convalescent Home
Treatment.
An agreement has been entered into, with the sanction of the
Ministry of Health, with the Invalid Children's Aid Association,
whereby the Association arranges, on behalf of the Maternity and
Child Welfare Committee, Convalescent Aid under the Council's
Maternity and Child Welfare Scheme. The Maternity and Child
Welfare Committee, under this arrangement, is not required to meet
any cost other than that the parent is unable to contribute towards
the actual cost of the treatment provided at the Convalescent Home.
The number of cases assisted during the year was 39.
(3) Provision of Midwives.— During the year the fees of midwives
in attendance on 55 mothers confined in their homes were paid
by the Council, and in 3 cases a home help was provided.
