pianos, and the production of tailored clothes. The factories
and workshops are in very good condition and the sanitary
arrangements are kept under constant supervision.
The Amount of Poor Law Relief.—The extent to which hospital
and other forms of gratuitous medical relief are utilised.—
On the 20th December, 1925, the number of persons in receipt
of Poor Law Relief per 10,000 of population amounted to 283.
This compares with 297 for the whole of the North District and
1,101 for the whole of the East District, and 493 for the whole
of London. The proportions were one-third Institutional Relief
and two-thirds Domiciliary Relief. During the year 5,618 persons
were admitted to the Hackney Hospital, 716 patients remained
on the 31st December, 1925, and in the last week of 1925,
121 persons received medical relief only. These figures relate
to the whole of the Hackney Union.
Population.—The population for the whole Borough gives a
density of 094 persons per acre, varying from 53'5 persons per
acre in the Northern Sub-district to 99.8 persons per acre in the
South-western Sub-district. The following table gives the estimated
population and density of population per acre for each of
the Registration Sub-districts in the Borough:—
