There is very little land remaining available for building purposes
in the Borough. Land previously in use as gardens for large
private houses is now being utilised for the building of houses
and private premises.
Hackney is largely a residential district, but there is a progressive
growth in the number of premises used for industrial
purposes.
By-laws—Houses Let in Lodgings.—There are 473 on
the present register. Local by-laws for these were approved on
4th September, 1912. New by-laws dealing with these have been
drafted by the London County Council, and are awaiting the
approval of the Ministry of Health.
Tents, Vans and Sheds.—There are no by-laws controlling
these. Difficulties that arise occasionally by the temporary occupation
of land by travelling showmen are dealt with by the use
of the Nuisance Clauses of the Public Health (London) Act, 1891.
Underground Rooms.—There are 7,607 underground rooms
in the Borough. Regulations affecting these, if used for sleeping
purposes, were approved on 27th April, 1924
One contravention of these Regulations was dealt with during
the year.
