Convalescent Home Treatment.
This service came into operation towards the close of 1922,
an Agreement being entered into with the Invalid Children's
Aid Association, who arrange for the actual treatment.
A detailed financial statement of each case is submitted to the
Maternity and Child Welfare Committee, together with the
medical practitioners of the case from the Welfare Centre.
In those cases where it is decided that the parents are able
to contribute to the cost of treatment the contributions are collected
by the Invalid Children's Aid Association, and are limited
to that amount which the parents are able to afford.
No payment is made to the Invalid Children's Aid
Association by the parent or by the Maternity and Child Welfare
Committee, except as a direct contribution towards the actual cost
of contribution for each case. This arrangement has only been
in active operation during the past three years, but at the close
of 1925, 94 cases had been sent away for periods of treatment
varying from three weeks to six months. The after reports from
the Centres on these cases, many of which were of a most serious
nature, have been most encouraging.
Home Helps.
The Ministry of Health approved in 1922 arrangements submitted
by the Council for providing assistance as regards household
duties to mothers during the period of confinements.
This arrangement has been of service on some occasions,
assistance having been granted in 17 cases in all.
Fortunately, this difficulty as regards household duties can
generally be arranged by the Health Visitor, through the cooperation
of neighbours or relatives.
Home Nursing.
Nursing assistance has been granted under the Maternity and
Child Welfare scheme during the past four years, and is one of
the most valuable of the Health services.
Unfortunately, the Ministry of Health will not permit nursing
assistance to be granted under the Maternity and Child Welfare
