The renewal of one licence was not applied for as the premises had
been demolished, and one was refused by the L.C.C. Licensing
Committee in consequence of non-use. Four of the slaughterhouses
have been little used during the year owing to various
causes.
The new By-law making the use of a stunning instrument
compulsory previous to bleeding came into force in March, and
although not liked at first by the butchers, is now universally used
on all animals.
286 visits were made during the usual slaughtering times,
when I have examined the carcases and organs of 71 oxen and
heifers, 10 calves, 1,232 sheep and lambs, and 46 pigs. No
serious case of disease has been met with, and Tuberculosis has
been entirely absent. The following I found diseased and had
destroyed
Livers of 7 oxen and 26 sheep affected with Distomatosis.
Livers of 1 ox and 5 sheep affected with Abscess.
Livers and lungs of 9 sheep affected with Parasitic Cysts.
Lungs of 1 ox affected with Parasitic Cysts.
The new by-laws regulating the slaughter of poultry are now
in force: these would have affected 8 of the Jewish butchers only,
but 5 of these have given up killing fowls, 2 have adapted their
premises to meet the requirements of the by-laws, and one is
being dealt with.
Wholesale Meat Factories.—These number 3, and one blackpudding
maker. 37 visits were made to these, and on each
occasion I found the premises kept in a cleanly condition, and
the carcases and meat of various kinds sound and free from
disease.
