well as of births to population; also the death rate per
1000 population, from all causes and from zymotic diseases.
These show that the death rate per 1000 population in
1871-80 was only 19.6 against 20.37 for 1861-70, which,
considering the increased density of population, is very
satisfactory. The death rates since 1875 show better
averages than before, having been 18.5, 19.3, 20.2, 18.8 and
18.3 for each of these years.
As I did not present a resume of the work carried out in
the Sanitary department during the 20 years, I now propose
to rectify the omission. It appears from the record of work
kept here, that there have been 6,965 cesspools emptied, filled
up, and drained into the sewer, a few of these having been
from time to time discovered even of late years; no less
than 10,896 choked drains have been either cleansed,
repaired, or reconstructed as the case required; 5,426 new
traps have been provided to the inlets of the drains; 2,034
yards drained; 4,518 yards have been newly paved or the
paving repaired; 32,214 houses have been whitewashed,
cleansed, and repaired; 5,931 houses have been disinfected
and cleansed after zymotic disease had appeared therein; and
5,094 dust bins have been provided. Additional means of
ventilation have also been provided in 2,939 houses, and a
better water supply or water supply apparatus in 5,119 houses.
There have also been 16,666 other nuisances abated, without
including the very large number of requests to remove dust,
which have been attended to. This is a goodly list, and
accounts, in my opinion, to a great extent for the low
death rate of the District.
I have attended, during the year, 25 meetings of the
Sanitary Committee; 15 meetings of the View Committee,
for the purpose of inspecting cowsheds, slaugter houses,
and proposed 6ites for new cowsheds and slaughter
houses; and also 11 meetings for other purposes. In
