43
or 12.2 per cent. of the total number for the whole District
against 7.6 in 1871. These numbers are singularly close, and
show that the birth rate may be fairly used, as I have done, to
check off the calculated population during the intervals of
each census. In Stamford Hill Ward the percentages of
population to the total number of residents, and of births to
the total births in the District were precisely the same, viz., 4.9
per cent. In West Hackney the ratio does not correspond
so closely, as the births in 1880 were 21.1 per cent. of the
whole, and the population in 1881, 20.2. In the Hackney
Sub-District, in consequence of the Small-pox and Fever
Hospitals, the German Hospital, the Hackney Union Workhouse,
and the City Union being within its limits, the birth
rate in 1880 was only 39.4 per cent. of the total births,
whilst the population was 41.2. This virtually corresponds
with the rates for 1871. In South Hackney the births were
22.3 per cent. and population 21.5, showing a rather smaller
proportion of births than in 1871. I have dwelt upon these
rates with some emphasis, as they have partly guided me in
calculating the population of the District. In my report
for 1879, I stated that the estimated population gave 35.9
births per 1,000 population, the true number being 36.0.
