nearly 50 per cent. over the population of 1871. The density
of population is also becoming greater, it having been
on July 1, 1880, as high as 46.2 persons to an acre; indeed,
it is considerably larger, as there are only 3,367 acres which
can be built upon out of the 3,935 of which the District
consists. Of the 568 acres, there are 345 which are
practically outside the District, viz., the Hackney Marshes,
which divide Clapton from the County of Essex. The real
density of our population is, therefore, 50.5 per acre. The
births have increased in a slightly greater ratio than the
population, but the marriages have proportionately decreased,
only 1,425 having been celebrated in 1880 against 1,278 in
1872. This would indicate a considerable increase in the
number of married persons coming to reside in the District,
especially as the number of births per 1,000 population was
35.6 in 1880, against only 33.2 in 1871. The increased birth
rate to a certain extent accounts for the low death rate, as
.we must have a larger proportion than in all London of
young persons and children above 10 years of age in our
midst, whose death rate per 1,000 is not so high as amongst
middle aged and elderly people.
