As might be expected the deaths have steadily increased
with the population, viz.: to 3392 against 3092 in 1877; of
these, 860, or 25.4 per cent. were registered in the first quarter;
832, or 24.5 per cent. in the second; 795, or 23.4 per cent. in
the third; and 905, or 26.7 per cent. in the fourth quarter, being
less than usual in the first and second quarters, and more in the
third and fourth quarters, as might have been expected from the
warmth of the early months, and the unusual heat in part of the
summer, and the great cold in November and December. The
numbers registered in the Sub-Districts are as follows:—in
Hackney, 1474; in South Hackney, 769; in West Hackney,
667; in Stoke Newington, 342; and in Stamford Hill, 140.
I have not calculated the per centages of deaths in the SubDistricts
because of the large number of public institutions in the
Hackney Sub-District, which renders it almost impossible to do
so with any degree of accuracy, especially as there has also been
a very large increase in the number of houses, and consequently
of inhabitants in some Sub-Districts, whilst there has been
but comparatively little in others. Of course it would be an
easy task to ascertain the number of deaths in the population of
the various institutions, and distribute them pro rato over the
other Sub-Districts, but from the other movements of the
population a correct calculation cannot be made of the death-rate
for each.
