The total number of births registered in this district in
1878 was 5940, of which 1484 were recorded in the first quarter;
1481 in the second; 1455 in the third; and 1520 in the fourth.
The largest number was registered in Hackney Sub-District,
viz.: 2122, which is equal to 35.7 per cent. of the whole; 1448
in South Hackney, or 24.4 per cent.; 1294 in West Hackney,
or 21.8 per cent.; 779 in Stoke Newington, or 13.1 per cent;
and in Stamford Hill only 297, or 50 per cent. The percentage
has very largely increased in Stoke Newington during the last
seven years, having been 13.1 in 1878 against 7.6 in 1871. The
number of births registered in Stoke Newington was 316 in
1871, and 779 in 1878, so that there were more than twice as
many in 1S78 as in 1871. There has also been a slightly
augmented per centage in the Stamford Hill Sub-District, and a
decreased per centage in all the others. The total number of
births has increased in all the Sub-districts, but not to so
considerably great an extent as in Stoke Newington so that the
per centages are smaller.
