3 rooms, as compared with 50.6 per cent. 40.4 per cent., 3.9 per
cent. and 5 per cent. respectively in 1894. This hears out the
statement that the neighbourhood is degenerating and becoming
more and more a poor-class one. The number of persons in these
families are as follows:—

At the Census of 1891 it was found that 59.1 per cent. of the
resident population in the Strand District, lived in tenements of three
rooms or under (18.1 per cent. in 1 room tenements, 24.2 per cent.
in two-room tenements, 16.8 per cent. in 3 room tenements) but
in the Area in 1895, no less than 94.4 per cent. occupy such
tenements.
