APPENDIX.
Denham Yard is a small cul de sac at the back of Drury Court,
containing three dwelling houses, with a population of 41, all of
whom live in single rooms. The houses are thoroughly bad.
Windsor Court is another blind court opening into the Strand.
The general sanitary conditions are bad in the extreme. The water
supply, &c. are generally situated together in dirty, foul, ill-paved
basements. There is little or no ventilation and poor light.
New Church Court.—This is a through court from the Strand to
White Hart Street. All the houses without exception are insanitary.
Many have no back ventilation. The western side of the court is
mostly occupied by a wood store. The last two houses at the Strand
end of the same side have been recently (October, 1895) destroyed by
an explosion and two others have been closed in consequence
thereof. The basements in many of the houses are in a filthy
condition.
Angel Court is the most westerly portion of this sub-area. It is
entered by an archway from the Strand, and from the entrance to the
steps is 140 feet; there it becomes Eagle Court (in St. Martin's
Parish) and opens thus into White Hart Street. Angel Court
contains twelve inhabited houses with a total population of 201, only
twenty-seven of whom live in one-room dwellings. With one or two
exceptions the houses in the court are sanitarily deficient. Several of
the houses have small yards at the back, but these like the basements
are ill-paved and damp. The ventilation is indifferent.
In While Hart Street there are several of the houses included in
the representation. Fifty-four out of the eighty-seven inhabitants
live in one-room dwellings. The ground floors are used as business
places. All the houses are worn out except No. 32 (where a fire
occurred in January, 1894). Nos. 29 and 30 are closed under a
Magistrate's order. There is total absence of through ventilation.
Feathers Court is a cul de sac opening out of Drury Lane, containing
a population of 147 in 11 houses. The houses arc old,
dilapidated, without through ventilation: they are practically backto-back
houses.
Area.
The represented Area comprises about 153,000 square feet or 3½
