30 ON THE SANITARY CONDITION OF
"Scheme, 1895," the Council have included the houses
on the land between the parish boundary and Kemble
Street, with the Dispensary in Stanhope Street. It is
proposed to remove all the buildings on the Area, and
to erect new dwellings upon the ground for the accommodation
of 500 persons. House room for 1,269 other
persons will be provided on part of the site of Millbank
Penitentiary. The remaining land in the Area may be
disposed of, as the Council may think fit. It is estimated
that the cost will be as follows:—

Workshops.
The importance of apportioning the inspection of
work-places to a special officer, has again been emphasised
during the past year. 496 work-places have
been inspected separately from dwelling houses, 1,272
visits have been paid, and orders requiring cleansinghave
been served in reference to 225 of them. In 6,
the ventilation has been improved; and in 3, overcrowding
has been abated by notice. But, as I reported
last year, good in many respects, results from the visit
of the inspector, and in most cases improvements are at
once effected by employers of labour on hearing
