THE STRAND DISTRICT, LONDON.
chiefly of cases of scarlet fever. The total amount paid
for certificates during the year was £19. 15s. 6d. Four
duplicate certificates were received. Half-a-crown is
paid to medical men certifying cases in their private
practice; one shilling for cases which occur in connection
with public appointments. The average cost per
notification, for 1895, was 1s. 11d. The Metropolitan
Asylums Board repay the Board these expenses.

The notifications received were at the rate of 7.98
per 1,000 of the population, against 7.3, 11.3, and 4.5
in the three preceding years respectively. Throughout
the Metropolis the average rate was 9.94 per 1,000 for
1895. 60 1 per cent, of the Strand cases were removed
to hospitals, as shown in detail in Table II. (Form B.)
