The general standard of cleanliness throughout the Borough remains at a reasonably high level, special attention being paid to this matter by the Health Visitors and Sanitary Inspectors during their routine visits and in their contact with the public at the Town Hall:—

DISINFECTION.
The disinfection of houses has been undertaken by the Council
during the year and the Wandle Valley Hospital Board have continued
to co-operate in the disinfection of bedding.
Disinfection which is not absolutely essential in the interests of
the public health is also undertaken upon a payment of 10s. per load
for bedding, etc., and 5s. for the first room and 2s. 6d. for each additional
room as applied to house disinfection.
MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE.
During 1946 the Corporation continued to exercise its functions
as an autonomous Maternity and Child Welfare authority.
In July, 1946, with the approval of the Minister of Health, a third
Health Visitor took up her duties. This appointment was considered
essential by the Corporation because of the rapid expansion of the
work.
The District Nursing Association midwives continued to conduct
a great deal of domiciliary midwifery in the area, working in close
harmony with the Department. During the year they attended a total
of 235 confinements. One hundred and two of these cases also had
the services of a doctor.
ANTE-NATAL CLINIC.
The Clinic is housed in the Nurses' Home, Montagu Gardens, where
very good accommodation is rented by the Council from the District
Nursing Association.
No change took place in the arrangement of this clinic, two
sessions weekly being held, with an average attendance of 16.5 patients
per session.
