DRAINAGE AND SEWERAGE.
The Council have continued the maintenance of the soil and
storm water drainage systems during the year. Because of the war,
however, no extensions have been undertaken.
RIVERS AND STREAMS.
In addition to the normal maintenance of the River Wandle
undertaken throughout the year, certain sections of the river were
cleaned out during 1944, silt, tree branches and obstructions being
removed.
Certain water-courses feeding the River Wandle were also cleaned.
CLOSET ACCOMMODATION.
Practically the whole of the area, is on the water carriage system,
draining into the public sewers. The few chemical and earth closets
normally in use in the district have been increased recently by the
necessity of installing chemical closets in Air-Raid Shelters and
Wardens' Posts.
Four cesspools were in use in the district at the end of the year.
PUBLIC CLEANSING.
The collection of house refuse throughout the Borough is carried
out by direct labour, under the supervision of the Borough Surveyor
and Engineer. The refuse is deposited on a site within the district.
During the year continued labour difficulties, combined with other
urgent work due to enemy air attacks, made regular fortnightly collection
impossible, but the Council are giving special attention to this
matter and hope to reorganise the existing systems with increased
man-power early in the New Year.
The type of receptacle in use throughout the Borough is the portable,
galvanised iron, covered dustbin.
The Council do not undertake the removal of the contents of earth
closets and cesspools from private premises. The occupiers of the
premises concerned carry out the work in a satisfactory manner.
The Croydon Corporation commenced tipping in the latter part
of the year 1940 on a site in the Borough north of Therapia Lane.
This work is continuing satisfactorily and is under constant supervision
by the Council's Officers.
SANITARY INSPECTION OF THE AREA.
The following statement by the Senior Sanitary Inspector gives
statistics as to the number of complaints received, inspections made,
defects remedied, and other work carried out by the Sanitary
Inspectors.
