VITAL STATISTICS.
Area. The area of the Borough is 3,048 acres, and of this the
Croydon Aerodrome absorbs about 280 acres and the Croydon Sewage
Works about 673 acres.
Population. The Registrar-General's estimate of the resident
population for the mid-year 1939 is 31,190, and the vital statistics in
this report are based on that figure. An increase of 310 is shown over
the figure for 1938, when the population for that year was estimated
at 30,880.
In 1915 there were 3,389 occupied houses, with an average of 4.0
persons per house.

The average number of persons per house was 3.3.
Births. (a) Live Births.— The Registrar-General returns the
number of births registered during 1939 as 394, of which 200 were
males and 194 were females. This gives a live birth rate of 12.63 per
1,000 total population, compared with 12.6 in 1938 and 15.0 for England
and Wales. Thirteen of the births were illegitimate, 6 males and 7
females.
(b) Stillbirths.— The number of stillborn children registered in
1939 was 13, of which 4 were males and 9 were females. This gives a
