VITAL STATISTICS.
Area. The area of the Borough is 3,048 acres, and of this the
Croydon Aerodrome absorbs about 280 acres and the Croydon Sewage
Works about 673 acres.
Population. The Registrar-General's estimate of the resident
population for the mid-year 1938 is 30,880, and the vital statistics in
this report are based on that figure. An increase of 290 is shown over
the figure for 1937, when the population for that year was estimated at
30,590.
In 1915 there were 3,389 occupied houses, with an average of 4.0
persons per house.

The average number of persons per house was 3.3.
The average number of persons during the year in the Beddington
Royal Female Orphanage, which is the only large residential institution
in the district, was 121.
Births. (a) Live Births.—The Registrar-General returns the
number of births registered during 1938 as 389, of which 187 were
males and 202 were females. This gives a live birth rate of 12.6 per
1,000 total population, compared with 12.91 in 1937 and 15.1 for England
and Wales. Twelve of the births were illegitimate, 6 males and 6
females.
(b) Stillbirths.—The number of stillborn children registered in
1938 was 6, of which 2 were males and 4 were females. This gives a
