Arrangements have been made by the Council for the examination
of sputa from cases, or suspected cases, and during the year 57 such
examinations were made.
Treatment for cases of Tuberculosis is under the control of the
Surrey County Council, who provide both sanatorium and dispensary
treatment.
The Tuberculosis After-Care Committee, which commenced activity
in 1935, continued its good work during 1937, assisting a number of
Tuberculosis patients and their dependents in various ways. At the
end of the year 157 cases in the Borough remained on the register.
Public Health (Prevention of Tuberculosis) Regulations, 1925.
On no occasion during the year was it necessary for the Council to
take steps under the regulations.
Public Health Act, 1925, Section 62, and Public Health Act, 1936,
Section 172. No action was necessary under these sections during the
year.
PREVENTION OF BLINDNESS.
The Authority for administering the various provisions of the Acts
dealing with blind persons is the Surrey County Council.
No special scheme for the Borough, apart from the general provisions
by the Surrey County Council quoted above, has been prepared
under Section 176 of the Public Health Act, 1936.
For children of pre-school age, an arrangement has been made
with the London County Council by which children suffering from
Ophthalmia Neonatorum are admitted for treatment to a London
County Council Hospital. Other visual defects in this group are seen
by the Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Croydon General Hospital under an
arrangement between the local authority and the authorities of the
Croydon General Hospital.
