On reference to Table H* of the Appendix, it will be seen that the total
number of persons who received Medical Orders from the relieving Officers
amounted to 5536. Of this number, 4041 were obtained to enable the
patients to secure admission into the Whitechapel Union Infirmary, or into
a Special Hospital. In addition to this number, the Infirmary Medical
Officers admitted many cases of emergency during the year. The majority
of the cases which were admitted into the Infirmary came from the Registered
Common Lodging Houses and from the Various Shelters.
