Board of Works, Whitechapel District.
Sanitary Department.
To Dr. Joseph Loane, Medical Officer of Health.
Sir,
In accordance with the usual custom, we hand you herewith
a complete tabulated statement, which shows the large
amount of work carried out by us during the past year, the
details of which have been under your notice and supervision.
The Public Health (London) Act, 1891, has very much
augmented the duties of this department, but we have endeavoured
throughout to keep pace with the great increase of work,
which, through the whole of the Summer months, caused your
Inspectors to work both early and late, on Sundays as well as
on week-days.
The very large increase in the number of cases of infectious
disease caused great anxiety during the year, as well as extra
work, for which, in conjunction with the other extra duties,
additional assistance was absolutely necessary. As will be seen
by the Tabulated Return, the total number of cases amounted
in all to 1,153. This exceeds the total number of last year by 767,
and also exceeds the total of 1890 and 1891 together by 197.
The extensive precautions taken to prevent an epidemic of
Cholera, we are thankful to say, have been attended with good
results.
We are, Sir,
Your obedient Servants,
RICHARD SKIDMORE WRACK,
THOS. P. WRACK,
GEORGE HARVEY,
ALFRED COOK,
Sanitary
Inspectors.
31st December, 1892.
