Tauter Illness in the District.
The Medical Officers of the Union have attended, during the last Quarter,
529 new cases of illness out of the Workhouse; including 10 of measles, 2
of scarlet-fever, 1 of hooping-cough, 72 of diarrhoea, 1 of fever, 13 of febricula,
1 of pyaemia, and 3 of erysipelas. In the corresponding Quarter of the
previous year the number of pauper cases of illness was 549; including 17
of measles, 3 of scarlet-fever, 15 of hooping-cough, 49 of diarrhoea, 6 of
fever, 21 of febricula, and 6 of erysipelas. The total number of cases of
illness in the Workhouse has been 725 ; including 1 of scarlet-fever, 38 of
diarrhoea, 7 of febricula, 3 of fever, 16 of erysipelas, and 38 of syphilis.
Meteorology of Greenwich.
The returns of the Registrar-General show that the rain-fall in the
Metropolis during the Quarter has been 5.25 inches. One inch deep of rainfall
on an acre weighs (allowing 10-lbs. to a gallon, which is the weight of a
gallon of distilled water) nearly 101 tons. During the corresponding
Quarter of last year the rain-fall was 10.03 inches. The mean temperature
of the air was 61.8°. In the corresponding Quarter of last year the mean
temperature was 58.3°. The hottest days during the Quarter were Sunday,
the 13th Aug., Monday, the 14th Aug., and Tuesday, the 15th
Aug., when the thermometer in the shade indicated respectively 92.6°, 93.8°,
and 93.1°. The hottest day during the corresponding Quarter of last year
was on Tuesday, the 17th Aug., when the thermometer indicated 83.6°.
