REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH,
For the Quarter ending 30th September, 1876.
To the Board of Works, Whtechapel District.
Gentlemen,
In the Quarter that ended on Saturday, the 30th Sept.,
1876, the total births in the District were 640, and the deaths 562. The
excess of births over deaths has therefore been, during this Quarter, 78.
But a number of deaths of non-residents occur in the London Hospital and
are included in the mortality returns. In order therefore to estimate the
correct mortality of the District, a deduction must be made in respect of
these deaths. These deaths are, on an average, 88 per cent, of the total
mortality in this Institution; and, as the total deaths are 167, 147 must be
deducted for the deaths of non-residents, thereby reducing the mortality
of residents in the District to 415, and increasing the number of births
above deaths to 225. In the corresponding Quarter of the previous year the
total births were 635, and the total deaths 568. Some allowance must,
however, be made for the deaths of residents in public institutions outside
the District.
