Water Supply.
I am happy to be able to state that the New River Company have
recently supplied with water, on the constant service, 53 houses in the
immediate vicinity of Middlesex Street, viz.: 33 houses in Love Court, 3
in New Goulston Street, 3 in Little Love Court, 5 in Hebrew Place, and
9 in Little Middlesex Street. About a quarter of the number of houses
(900) in this District, which are supplied by the New River Company,
are now on the constant service.
Sanitary Improvements on the North Side of the District.
Goodwin's Buildings, Wentworth Steeet.
This court, which was one of the worst in the District, has been entirely
demolished by the owner (Mr. Isaacs), in consequence of notices being so
frequently served upon him by Mr. Wrack, the Inspector, to repair the
dilapidated condition of the houses, to remove the recurring nuisance of the
public privies, and to abate the overcrowded state of the houses.
The court formerly contained six houses, without yards; the houses
consisted of two rooms each. The entire six houses had an area for light
and air of only 320 superficial feet, and in which space there was a dust-bin
and two public privies, which were situated within a few feet of the street.
The court now consists of only four houses, each of which has a yard and
proper conveniences. The present arrangement of the court gives an area
for light and air of 597 superficial feet. The court was formerly approached
by a narrow covered way, but it is now open to Wentworth Street, and is
well paved and drained.
Two houses also in Wentworth Street, situated at the corner of Goodwin's
Buildings, had neither yards nor closets (the tenants having to use the
closets in Goodwin's Buildings), have also been demolished, and two houses
have been erected in their stead, each having a yard and proper conveniences.
