16.—For the Recovery of Penalties, the 22nd section of the 11th and
12th Vic., c. 43, (Public Health Act, 1848) should be inserted.
The above recommendations for the Amendment of the Nuisances'
Removal Act having been approved by the Association of the Medical
Officers of Health in the Metropolis, were handed in by me at the close of
my evidence, given before the Royal Sanitary Commissioners in 1870, and
are published as a portion of my evidence in the third volume of the
second report of the Royal Sanitary Commission.

* In 1868, the sub-District of St. Anne, Soho, was taken from the Strand District
and added to St. James, Westminster. Before the merging of these two Districts
the Strand District was the most densely populated in London, its density being .004
of an acre to a person.
† In 1869, the Districts of Clerkenwell and Saint Luke's were merged in the
Holborn District.
‡ These areas have recently been supplied to the Registrar - General by the
Ordinance Survey Department, and include 2,178 acres of tidal water or River Thames.
The area of Whitechapel, by the new measurement, is 405 acres instead of 406 acres.
§ In 1870, the District of St. George, Southwark, and Newington, were merged
in the District of St. Saviour, Southwark.
|| On 1st January, 1870, the Districts of East London and West London were
merged in the London City District.
