this District. Since the date of those Reports the Inspectors have visited
all the others in the District, the particulars of which are set forth in
the following letter addressed to Captain Harris, the Commissioner of
Police, under whose authority these houses are placed.
BOARD OF WORKS—WHITECHAPEL DISTRICT.
July 14th, 1876.
Dear Sir,
The Sanitary Officers of this Board have completed the Inspection
of the Registered Common Lodging Houses situated within this District.
During the last three months 100 Registered Common Lodging Houses have
been visited, and the Inspectors have measured all the rooms containing beds for
nightly lodgers, with the view of ascertaining the cubic space which is allotted to each
occupant of a bed.
As the result of this Inspection it has been found that out of the 100 houses containing
355 rooms, 238 of such rooms were ascertained to be overcrowded; that is to
say, that a less space than 300 cubic feet is allotted to each lodger.
The houses inspected during the last three months are situated in the undermentioned
localities:—
Nos. 46, 47, 48, 49, 60, 62, 63, 64, 65, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 96 and 98, Wentworthstreet,
including the cottage at the rear of No. 49.
Nos. 6, 7, 32, 33, 34 and 35, George-yard ; Nos. 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 16, 17, 18 and
19, George-street; No. 1, George-court; No. 1, Garden-court, George-yard ; Nos. 11,
12, 12a, 13, 14, 15, 15a, 16 and 17, Thrawl-street; Nos. 1, 1a, 2, 3, 3a and 4, Osbornplace
Nos. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 17 and 18, Upper Keate-street; Nos. 8, 9, 11, 12 and 13,
Lower Keate-street; No. 37, Glasshouse-street; Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4, Bull-court ; No.
13, Osborn-street; No. 29, Royal Mint-street; Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4, New Montaguestreet
; No. 32, Crown-court, Aldgate ; Nos. 48, 49 and 50, Gun-street; Nos. 2 and 5,
New Martin-street; No. 6, Little Pearl-street; Nos. 5 and 14, Plough-street; Nos.
6, 17, 18 and 19, Buckle-street; Nos. 65 and 69, Lambeth-street; Nos. 231 and 232,
Whitechapel-road; No. 12, Wellclose-square, including the house at the rear ; Nos.
4, 5, 6 and 7, Gower's-row, including the cottages at the rear, Nos. 1 and 2.
