The deaths from epidemic diseases in the entire District have been 59 ;
viz.:—0 from small-pox, 6 from measles, 5 from scarlet-fever, 1 from diphtheria,
37 from hooping-cough, 3 from diarrhoea, and 7 from fever. Fourteen
deaths of patients from this District occurred in the District Fever
Hospital; thus making a total of 21 deaths from fever.
In the corresponding Quarter of the previous year the deaths from
epidemic diseases were 28 ; viz. : 1 from small-pox, 1 from measles, 8 from
scarlet-fever, 4 from diphtheria, 3 from hooping-cough, 6 from diarrhoea,
and 5 from fever. In addition to the 5 deaths from fever, there were 2
deaths in the Fever Hospital; thus making a total of 7 deaths from fever
for that Quarter.
Mortality of Young Children.
The mortality of children under 1 year of age was 102. This is
15.6 per cent. of the total mortality. In the corresponding Quarter of the
previous year the rate of mortality of children under 1, was 15.0 per cent.
of the total mortality. In the Spitalfields sub-District the rate is 27.5 per
cent. ; in the Mile End New Town 17.2 per cent.; in the "Whitechapel
North 27.1 per cent. ; in the Whitechapel Church 3.4 per cent.; in the
Goodman's Fields 28.5 per cent. ; and in the Aldgate 14.2 per cent. In the
Goodman's Fields sub-District the deaths under 1 year were 16, and the
total deaths 56; in the Whitechapel North sub-District the total deaths were
59, and those under 1 year were 16 ; while in the Whitechapel Church subDistrict
the deaths under 1 year were only 8, and the total deaths 229.
This difference is explained by the deaths in the London Hospital, in which
Institution the deaths of children under 1 year are very few.
In the corresponding Quarter of the previous year the rate of mortality
of children under 1 year in the Spitalfields sub-District was 23.4 per cent. ;
in the Mile End New Town it was 13.0 per cent.; in the Whitechapel North
27.2 per cent.; in the Whitechapel Church 4.7 per cent.; in the Goodman's
Fields 32.5 per cent.; and in the Aldgate 23.8 per cent.
Pauper Illness in the District.
The Medical Officers of the Union have attended, during the past
Quarter, 753 new cases of illness out of the Workhouse; including 14 of
measles, 0 of scarlet-fever, 12 of hooping-cough, 3 of diarrhoea, 21 of fever,
25 of febricula, and 3 of erysipelas. In the corresponding Quarter of the
previous year the number of pauper cases of illness was 757 ; including 0 of
measles, 7 of scarlet-fever, 6 of hooping-cough, 9 of diarrhœa, 3 of fever,
39 of febricula, and 3 of erysipelas. The total number of eases of illness
in the Workhouse has been 1057 ; including 15 of measles, 2 of scarlet-fever,
7 of hooping-cough, 15 of diarrhœa, 48 of febricula, 41 of fever, 15 of
erysipelas, and 33 of syphilis.
