REPORT
of the
MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH,
For the Quarter ending, lst April, 1876.
To the Board of Works, Whitechapel District.
Gentlemen,
In the Quarter that ended on Saturday, the 1st April,
1876, the total births in the District were 721, and the deaths 653. The
excess of births over deaths has therefore been, during this Quarter, 68. As
the deaths of the non-residents which occurred in the London Hospital are
included in the mortality returns, a deduction of such deaths must be made
in order to estimate the correct mortality of the District. These deaths are
on an average 66 per cent., exclusive of sudden deaths and deaths from accidents,
of the total mortality in this Institution; and, as the total deaths are
185, 122 must be deducted for the deaths of non-residents, thereby reducing
the mortality of the District to 531, and increasing the number of births
above deaths to 190. In the corresponding Quarter of the previous year the
total births were 703, and the total deaths 685.
In the Spitalfields sub-District the births were 195, and the deaths 98 ;
in the Mile End New Town 171, and the deaths 162 ; in the Whitechapel
North 119, and the deaths 59 ; in the Whitechapel Church 80 and 229 (in this
sub-District the London Hospital is situated); in the Goodman's Fields 98
and 56; and in the Aldgate 58 and 49. The deaths have exceeded the
births in the Whitechapel Church District by 149; but, from this number,
tho deaths of 122 non-residents must be deducted.
The deaths in the London Hospital have been 185. In the corresponding
Quarter of the previous year tho deaths in this Institution were
194.
The deaths in the Workhouse have been 104. In the corresponding
Quarter of last year they were 126.
