BOROUGH OF MALDEN AND COOMBE
ANNUAL REPORT
OF
THE MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
1964
Public Health Department,
Municipal Offices,
New Malden.
1965.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the
former Borough of Maiden and Coombe.
Lady and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit my Annual Report for the year 1964, the
last report for the Borough in its present form, and my last as Medical Officer
of Health. I regret that it is not possible to comment in the customary detail
in the various sections of the text, time will permit only general observations
and, at the time of writing, the full statistics are not yet available from the
Registrar General.
So far as infectious diseases are concerned there is a gratifying fall
in the numbers of cases of sonne dysentery. On the other hand the troublesome,
if not serious, epidemic vomiting has continued its prevalence, a number of schools
having been affected. The department has co-operated with the Public Health
Laboratory in investigating possible causes of this illness. Until the infecting
organism is identified and its method of spread through the community traced,
there is little beyond attention to general hygiene which can be done to prevent
its occurrence.
The maintenance of health and prevention of disease depends upon the
co-operation and good 3ense of all members of the community. Shopkeepers,
delivery men, factories, schools and colleges all have a part to play. From
these and from general practitioners, district nurses, hospitals and clinics
I have had the utmost co-operation and help during my work in Maiden and Commbe
