NOTES ON UNSATISFACTORY SAMPLES
Cod Roe. A sample of cod roe was found to contain added salt which
was not specified on the label. The canners undertook to amend their
labels when reprinting.
Canned Cherries. 'Canned Cherries in heavy syrup' were found to be
packed in 'syrup' and the manufacturers agreed to delete the word
'heavy' from the label describing this product.
Blackcurrant Health Drink. On analysis an informal sample of fruit
drink was found to be 22% deficient in ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and a
subsequent formal sample proved to be genuine. The investigations by
the retailer and manufacturers failed to prove conclusively the reason
for the unsatisfactory result of the first sample analysed.
Beverage. A beverage bearing a label which described the contents as
containing sucrose was sampled. Although 'sucrose' is a specific
chemical name for the article which is commonly known simply as sugar,
it is not one which would indicate to the ordinary purchaser the true
nature of this ingredient and the manufacturers attention was drawn to
this irregularity.
