My work at Maiden has made me realise even more
clearly, that this is a social problem in which other forms of
social service must play a part. It has also brought vividly to
mind how important are housing conditions, proper help in the
home, and proper links with the local industries, both in the
treatment of those people in the early stages of their disease
and in making life easier for those who are already partially
crippled with arthritis.
On the introduction of the new Health Service 1 do hope
that this social service will not only allow us to continue, but
will be extended so as to improve the present services for those
who live in the Borough and also provide facilities for people,
although not in the Borough itself, who are living in the same
part of the County.
It has been a great pleasure to me to be associated with
the Medical Officer of Health and the Social services of the
Borough and, once again, I should like to express my appreciation
for work that has been done, in spite of their limited
facilities, by the physiotherapists and the staff of the clinic.
I do feel that the general practitioners in the area have
made use of the scheme in the treatment of their patients and
1 only wish that we could have done more for some of the
patients that have been referred to us
