Chutney.—This sample contained 150 parts per million sulphur dioxide
as a preservative.
Public Analyst's comments:—
I have reported the presence of sulphur dioxide in this sample,
but do not consider it worth while to follow the matter up. Dried
fruit and now dehydrated vegetables manufactured under licence are
allowed relatively large amounts of sulphur dioxide and as such fruit
and vegetables are, or at any rate may be the basis of chutney (this
sample if fruit and vegetable basis) the sulphur dioxide would be
allowable under the "necessarily introduced" proviso of the Preservatives
Regulations.
Pea Soup Flour.—In this case the sample was infested with mites
and grubs and was thereby unfit for food. On visiting the shop it was
established to be very old stock, the shopkeeper having only two or three
packets' left. These were destroyed.
Margarine.—This sample contained a small amount of excess water.
It was really submitted on account of complaints in regard to taste and
in regard to this the Analyst reported: —
As to taste the article is alkaline in reaction due, I suggest, to
some error in refining of the oils used, this would result in some soap
formation and give an unpleasant flavour. I confirm that the taste
is unpleasant but could not say the article is unfit for food, though
complaint is justified and probably to be expected.
The matter was taken up with the Ministry of Food and no more
complaints were received.
Beef Sausages.—Instead of containing 37½ per cent. meat and 7½ per
cent. low fat Soya, the sample had 40 per cent. meat and no Soya. A
formal sample taken later was found to be correct.
