Below are given the percentages of children, born in 1970, who
had been given protection against whooping cough, diphtheria and
poliomyelitis by the end of 1972. The figure in brackets is the corresponding
percentage for England and Wales:—
Whooping cough 78 (79)
Diphtheria 78 (81)
Poliomyelitis 80 (80)
The continuing need for immunisation and vaccination is brought
home to the public at large by the use of leaflets, posters and displays,
and by the teaching of the Health Visitors at the clinics and in the
course of their district visits.
Reinforcement Measures
In addition to the above measures of primary protection the
following numbers were given re-inforcement doses:—

At the end of the year, 95,175 persons had completed a full
course of immunisation since the scheme began in 1956. The age
distribution of these completed cases is given below:—

Vaccination against Rubella for Women of
Child-Bearing Age
Department of Health and Social Security Circular 17/72 was
issued on 29th March, 1972, and stated that the Joint Committtee on
Vaccination and Immunisation had reviewed the question of vaccinating
women of child-bearing age against rubella.
They advised that routine vaccination was not recommended,
but that certain seronegative women at special risk of acquiring rubella
or transmitting it to others, including school teachers, nursery staff,
nurses and the staff of ante-natal clinics, could be offered vaccination.
Consequently, in November, 1972, the appropriate members of
the Council's staff were informed of this and invited to apply for a
preliminary blood test if they wished to take advantage of the offer.
One hundred and ten women applied, and attended our clinics for
blood sampling, with the following results:—
