VITAL STATISTICS
Prom study of the birth and death rates and infectious
disease notifications the health of our community appears to
have maintained its usual high level.
Although the birth rate, at 10.8, is the lowest ever
recorded in the district, it is very gratifying to note that the
death rate has again fallen and that our infant mortality rate
has reached a record low level.
Deaths from tuberculosis numbered only 8, and the rate,
at 0.11 per thousand, is our lowest ever.
One maternal death occurred giving a maternal mortality
rate of 1.23 per thousand births, but it is of some consolation
to know that the one death which gave us this rate was
unavoidable.
It is not possible to give the usual full table of comparable
statistics as Form S.D.55, which gave the necessary information.
is no longer issued by the General Register Office.
Certain figures have, however, been extracted from the
Registrar General's Weekly and Quarterly returns, and these
are set. out on page 10 to allow comparison between the
local statistics and those for the rest of the country.
