The registered live births totalled 990, an increase of no
less than 178 over the year before. The birth rate rises from
12.3 to 14.3 per thousand of the population.
Of the total live births 470 were males and 520 females.
Seventeen males and 14 females were illegitimate.
Stillbirths numbered 27, 16 being males and 11 females.
Two of the female stillbirths were illegitimate.
The total births (live and still) at 1,017 exceeded 1,000
for the first time in the history of the district.
Ward Distribution. District Medical Officers of Health
have no information as to the home addresses of the registered
births which occurred to residents outside the district and
hence for comparative purposes as between wards, use is made
of the births which occurred during the year. This information
is taken from the notifications of birth and from the returns
of the births registered locally. These records show
that 945 live births and 23 stillbirths took place during the
year as compared with a total of 990 live and 27 stillbirths
registered during the same period. The distribution is given
in the table below. The birth-rates shown in this table are
slightly lower than if based upon the registered births inasmuch
as the total on which they are computed is 45 less than
the registered births.
